He’s Their Guy

June 30, 2016

OK, Donald Trump now has an “Evangelical Executive Advisory Board” that, we are told, will “provide advisory support to Mr. Trump on those issues important to Evangelicals and other people of the faith in America.”

The list includes such names as James Dobson, David Jeremiah, Ralph Reed, Michele Bachmann, and Jerry Falwell Jr., who, along with his wife, visited Trump at Trump Towers.  They were photographed together posing in front of a wall decorated with magazine covers that featured Trump.  Falwell’s wife, unfortunately, was standing with a Playboy Magazine cover over her shoulder which drew some interesting responses.

This evangelical advisory board, excuse me, evangelical executive advisory board, will assure that it is safe for evangelicals to vote for Trump.  Dobson has already started, telling us this week that Trump has been born again, apparently led to the Lord by fellow-advisor charismatic pastor Paula White, and is now a “baby Christian.”

In essence, their job is to tell us that we need to get behind Trump because he’s going to Make Christianity Great Again. He’s going to appoint pro-life Supreme Court Judges, repeal the tax laws that prohibit churches from endorsing or opposing political candidates, put prayer back in schools, and make all of the retail employees say “Merry Christmas” from Thanksgiving to New Years.  I suppose they also have the duty to assure us that we can trust him on this even though he is rather vague on how he is going to do all that.

And some evangelicals are coming around even if they see Trump as falling short of evangelical perfection because, in the words of Eric Metaxas, “he may well be our only hope for finding our way back to bolder expressions of [faith]. The eerie waxworks automaton formerly known as Hillary Rodham Clinton will no doubt double down on President Obama’s two-term repulsion to Constitutional government, in which unutterably sad case we simply wouldn’t ever be able to claw our way back up the abyss into which we shall have been thrust.”

So there you go, we have two options, Donald Trump or the abyss.

I don’t really have any good words to respond to such people so I will let the apostle Paul do it.

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” II Timothy 3:1-5 (ESV)
